Shareholders challenge BP’s climate strategy
Listen back on BBC Radio | Follow This founder Mark van Baal is back on World Business Report to talk about the call to vote against the BP chair.
Many shareholders were unhappy with BP’s shift away from renewable energy and the company’s renewed focus on oil and gas.
At the company’s annual meeting in London, roughly a quarter of shareholders rebelled by voting against Chair Helge Lund.
Mark Van Baal, founder of green activist shareholder group Follow This: ‘we started this campaign to give a clear signal that climate needs to be in the boardrooms. Fossil fuel companies are responsible for the vast majority of all emissions. If you want to have any change to tackle the climate crisis, we need to half emissions in the next ten years. These companies are not going to do it on their own, they only change if their shareholders are demanding this.’
